There was a scene in which Esperazna is at a carnival with Sally and she questions why she is taken away by a man and how she is left there alone with another one. I cried through this whole scene. She didn’t describe much just questioned what was said. “You lied. Everyone lied. It’s not at all what everyone says it is.” In my opinion, that night Esperanza was raped. All alone in a world she thought she knew she understood with Sally she found out the hard way that not everything seems what it is. I feel this scene is one of many iluminating scenes throughout the book because it explains how Esperanza slowly gains maturity from her mistakes, even though in one of life’s hardest ways.
